The technology department does not support standard ink jet printers. While the cost of these printers is low, the upkeep on them is extreamly expensive and next to impossible. We do understand that there may be a need for these printers in some cases ;therefore , employees can purchase desktop inkjet printers.
When selecting a printer, remember the following:
Make certain that the printer you are looking at is compatible with Windows XP. Most HP printers are Windows compatible; however, some may not be. If you do not know ASK.
Most of the computers have a parallel printer connection and most modern printers are USB. Make certain you get a cable along with the printer.
Do not ask for the extended warranty. The best warranty you will get will require you to pay shipping both ways for a printer that needs warranty work.
I am recommending the HP deskjet 6122 (or similar).
As usual the ink and maintenance on the desktop inkjet printers are the responsibility of the campus. make certain that you look at the cost of the ink.
In the event that the campus principal requests and has the funds to purchase a laser printer, the technology department will:
take care of placing the order
set up the printer at the disired location
make the printer available on the network
order the parts for maintaining and maintenance on the printer
The campus will be resonsible for the consumables (toner, paper etc..) and any subsequent repair costs.
There are four types of users on a local computer, we utilize two. A regular user, this is how our students are set up, can access the loaded software and hardware on a computer. A power user, this is how our employees are set up, can utilize the loaded hardware and software and can load printer driver software to the local machine. Power users can not load other "fixed" hardware (i.e. scanners) to a system.
Employees can install the printers manually. They can not use the automatic printer setup. The following instructions explain how to set up the printers manually. If an employee still can not set up the printer a technician will be sent to the room to assist.
It is recommended that you use a USB cable to connect your printer to the computer, many times this will allow for the least difficult setup and the printer will be able to communicate better with the computer. If your printer supports the use of a parallel cable, you can still use one. It is not recommended!
INSTRUCTIONS:In the event you printer's driver software is already included in Windows XP and you are using a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, you will not need to do anything to load the printer. On the other hand if your printer software is not included in Windows XP or you are using a parallel printer cable then you will have to load the printer software manually.
